How I Stay in a Good Mood

We all get upset or mad sometimes, right? I’m one of those people who gets mad about being mad, because it’s not a state of mind in which I like to be or stay. I’ve realized I always do this one thing when I get angry…

I use to go running. That hasn’t been my go-to lately – maybe because of where I live or simply because I’ve found something else.

What I definitely do every single time is distract myself. I purposely put something else on my mind. It’s usually 1 of these 3 things:

  1. I put on happy music. I'm definitely not in the mood for happy music, but I put it on anyway and it slowly elevates my mood again.
  2. I put on a happy/interesting show or movie. I’m not a huge tv watcher, but I will sometimes find a comedian or a good tv show to distract myself from the anger.
  3. I call someone – but not to vent. That person doesn’t ever have to know I’m mad, but just having to adjust my behavior to have a good conversation also gets me out of that mental funk. I do also call people to vent sometimes – usually my mom. But most of the time, I make a phone call just to distract myself from the current feeling of grrrrr.

And you know what? 99-100% of the time, by the time I’m done being distracted, the anger has subsided. It doesn’t mean the “thing” doesn’t come to mind, but I’m now in a better mental state to deal with it.

Pick one of these the next time you’re upset and let me know if it worked for you.
